Three men are travelling into the future in the name of
science to find out what life will be like in the future.
The time distance they are travelling is not hundreds,
thousands or even millions of years, they stay within
the life span of a human being. Which means that people
who were roughly the same age as the travellers at the
time of departure would still be alive.
Each of the three protagonists travels a bit farther into
the future and is meant to return after a certain time.
The area to be examined is a close perimeter of the laboratory,
the start- and landing-point of the time travel device.
After a moment of hesitation, whether such drastic changes
could happen in such a short time span as outlined in
the book, I remembered the history of the second world
war. A person who stars in 1935 and finds himself in 1945
would be quite shocked.
Equally, a person starting in 1940 and ending up in 1960
would be quite baffled.
This story must be read with the fact in mind that
the world was changing much more drastically in the beginning
of the 20th century than it was between 1970 and 2000.
If you were born in Germany after 1980, this story might
seem unrealistic to you because you have never experienced
such drastic changes.
But in 1970 the memory of he second world war was still
fresh and the fear of equally horrible events was omnipresent
during the period of the cold war. |
